Have You Actually Read Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein?

I am late to the party on this one. I spent most of my life thinking that I actually read Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. But, all of my memories of the book were actually from movies, pop culture, and our collective misconceptions. So, I actually read the book this summer. I really didn’t know anything about the book and I am glad that I did.

The original copy of Shelley’s Frankenstein: or, the Modern Prometheus sold at a Christie’s auction in 2021 for $1.17 million.

I am not going to spoil the book in today’s blog post. I will be doing that over a series of posts about Frankenstein. The only thing that I am going to do today is to dispel one big misconception from the book. I can already hear the literary nerds jumping in to say what it is…

Frankenstein is not the name of the monster. Frankenstein is the name of the person who contructs the monster. The monster, or the creature, is not named in the book. Now, go read it. It’s in the public domain. You don’t have to spend $1.17 million to read it. Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein is literally available on any platform for free. The audiobook is about 7 hours. Binge it.
