<p>Let me challenge the conventional wisdom of seeking creativity and solutions externally. Here, I invert the popular notion of &#8216;thinking outside the box,&#8217; taking you on a journey through my experience in a unique setting: a featureless, stark white room, devoid of distractions, company, or external stimuli. This narrative isn&#8217;t just about physical confinement; it&#8217;s an exploration into the depths of the human psyche when isolated from the world as we know it.</p>

<p>I&#8217;ll take you through the psychological and emotional transformations I underwent while I conducted this thought experiment about what would happen if I was stuck inside a white room. As I thought deeply about what would happen, I started journaling the experience. This experience evolved into an introspective voyage, revealing insights about resilience, the power of the human mind, and the unexpected creativity that can blossom in the most unlikely environments.</p>

</div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="the-initial-shock-and-adaptation"><strong>The Initial Shock and Adaptation</strong></h2>

<p>The moment I first found myself in the white room, it felt as if I had stepped into a realm devoid of context or markers. This stark, featureless space offered no clues or directions. My initial reactions oscillated between surprise, confusion, and a burgeoning sense of curiosity. The sheer whiteness of the environment was disorienting, almost as if I had become a character within a blank canvas, waiting for the story to unfold.</p>

<p>In the early hours of this surreal experience, my primary strategy for coping was exploration. I walked the perimeter of the room, touching the smooth, unadorned walls, half-expecting to find a hidden door or a clue that would reveal the purpose of this space. But the room offered no secrets; it was just an expanse of unyielding whiteness. This led me to establish a routine—a way to impose structure in an environment that lacked any. I designated areas for different activities: a corner for meditation, a space for exercise, and a spot for resting. This routine became my anchor, offering a semblance of normalcy and control in an otherwise alien setting.</p>

<p>As I adapted to the environment, my initial thoughts and emotions were a mix of bewilderment and introspection. The lack of external distractions turned my focus inward. I found myself analyzing my life, my choices, and my values with an intensity I had never experienced before. The struggle to adapt to the stark surroundings was not just about physical survival but also about maintaining my mental equilibrium. I grappled with feelings of loneliness and the realization that this journey was as much about discovering myself as it was about enduring the physical confines of the room.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="the-deepening-of-isolation"><strong>The Deepening of Isolation</strong></h2>

<p>As the days in the white room unfolded, the initial shock of my surroundings gave way to a deepening sense of isolation. This progression wasn&#8217;t just about being alone; it was about the complete absence of external reference points—no sounds of life, no natural light, no change in the environment. The room&#8217;s relentless uniformity began to weigh heavily on my mental state. The silence and stillness, which at first were merely disconcerting, evolved into something more profound and challenging.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img data-recalc-dims="1" decoding="async" width="750" height="750" data-attachment-id="4434" data-permalink="https://nothans.com/thinking-inside-the-box/image-1-19" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/nothans.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/image-1.png?fit=1024%2C1024&amp;ssl=1" data-orig-size="1024,1024" data-comments-opened="0" data-image-meta="{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;0&quot;}" data-image-title="image-1" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-large-file="https://i0.wp.com/nothans.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/image-1.png?fit=750%2C750&amp;ssl=1" src="https://i0.wp.com/nothans.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/image-1.png?resize=750%2C750&#038;ssl=1" alt="" class="wp-image-4434" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/nothans.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/image-1.png?w=1024&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https://i0.wp.com/nothans.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/image-1.png?resize=300%2C300&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/nothans.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/image-1.png?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w, https://i0.wp.com/nothans.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/image-1.png?resize=768%2C768&amp;ssl=1 768w, https://i0.wp.com/nothans.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/image-1.png?resize=530%2C530&amp;ssl=1 530w, https://i0.wp.com/nothans.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/image-1.png?resize=750%2C750&amp;ssl=1 750w, https://i0.wp.com/nothans.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/image-1.png?resize=500%2C500&amp;ssl=1 500w" sizes="(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" /></figure>

<p>Loneliness crept in slowly, like a creeping vine that wrapped itself around my thoughts. It was not merely the absence of people; it was the lack of any connection to the outside world. I started to miss the most mundane sounds—the rustle of leaves, the distant hum of traffic, and the murmur of voices. This sensory deprivation intensified, turning the room into a vacuum where even the smallest sounds—my breath, my footsteps, my heartbeat—became a thunderous presence, filling the void with their echoes.</p>

<p>In this sensory void, my internal dialogue took on a new depth. Deprived of external distractions, my mind became a theatre of memories, fears, and aspirations. Thoughts and feelings that were usually in the background of a busy life came to the forefront. I began to engage in profound self-reflection, parsing through layers of my psyche that I had never examined so closely before. This internal dialogue was not always comfortable; it forced me to confront aspects of myself that I had previously ignored or suppressed. However, it was also an opportunity for growth, a chance to understand myself in ways I never had when the noise of the outside world drowned out my inner voice. This deepening isolation became a catalyst for an intense and revealing journey into the innermost chambers of my mind.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="inner-discovery-and-mental-resilience"><strong>Inner Discovery and Mental Resilience</strong></h2>

<p>The prolonged isolation in the white room initiated a significant shift in my perspective, from an external focus on the world around me to an internal exploration of the self. This transition wasn&#8217;t instantaneous; it evolved as the silence and solitude of the room amplified my inner thoughts and feelings. As days passed, the external world I knew and relied on receded into the background, giving way to a landscape rich with introspection and self-discovery.</p>

<p>In this introspective state, I began to uncover insights about my own personal strengths and weaknesses. I realized resilience wasn&#8217;t just about enduring difficult situations but about how one adapts and grows through them. I discovered a strength in my ability to find calmness and clarity in solitude, a stark contrast to my previous belief that constant activity and interaction were essential for contentment. On the flip side, I confronted my weaknesses: my fears of being alone with my thoughts, my reliance on external validation, and my struggle with unresolved emotions from the past.</p>

<p>Perhaps the most unexpected aspect of this journey was the role of imagination and memory in coping with isolation. In the absence of new experiences, my mind became a canvas for memories and fantasies. I revisited moments from my past, reliving them with a vividness that brought both joy and pain. Imagination became a sanctuary, a place where I could create worlds, stories, and scenarios far beyond the white walls that confined me. This mental escapism was not just a distraction; it was a form of mental resilience, a way of keeping the mind active and engaged when external stimuli were non-existent.</p>

<p>Through this journey of inner discovery, I found that mental resilience is as much about embracing vulnerability as it is about strength. It involves acknowledging and exploring one&#8217;s fears, hopes, and dreams. The white room, with its unyielding silence and emptiness, became a space for profound personal growth, teaching me more about myself than I could have imagined.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="time-space-and-selfperception"><strong>Time, Space, and Self-Perception</strong></h2>

<p>In the white room, my perceptions of time and space underwent a dramatic transformation. Removed from the natural rhythms of day and night, time became a fluid, elusive concept. Hours and minutes lost their usual meaning, and my perception of time started to depend more on how I was feeling than on the time. This disconnection from conventional time markers led to a unique experience of space as well. The room, though physically unchanging and confined, felt at times boundless, a vast expanse that mirrored the endless wanderings of my thoughts.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img data-recalc-dims="1" decoding="async" width="750" height="750" data-attachment-id="4435" data-permalink="https://nothans.com/thinking-inside-the-box/image-2-17" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/nothans.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/image-2.png?fit=1024%2C1024&amp;ssl=1" data-orig-size="1024,1024" data-comments-opened="0" data-image-meta="{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;0&quot;}" data-image-title="image-2" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-large-file="https://i0.wp.com/nothans.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/image-2.png?fit=750%2C750&amp;ssl=1" src="https://i0.wp.com/nothans.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/image-2.png?resize=750%2C750&#038;ssl=1" alt="" class="wp-image-4435" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/nothans.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/image-2.png?w=1024&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https://i0.wp.com/nothans.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/image-2.png?resize=300%2C300&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/nothans.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/image-2.png?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w, https://i0.wp.com/nothans.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/image-2.png?resize=768%2C768&amp;ssl=1 768w, https://i0.wp.com/nothans.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/image-2.png?resize=530%2C530&amp;ssl=1 530w, https://i0.wp.com/nothans.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/image-2.png?resize=750%2C750&amp;ssl=1 750w, https://i0.wp.com/nothans.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/image-2.png?resize=500%2C500&amp;ssl=1 500w" sizes="(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" /></figure>

<p>This altered perception of time and space significantly impacted my sense of self and reality. In the absence of external events and interactions, I began to view myself not just in relation to others or my environment but as an individual entity with its own intrinsic value and complexities. The isolation stripped away many of the roles and identities I held in the outside world, revealing a more fundamental sense of self. It was as if the layers of social constructs and expectations were peeled back, leaving a raw, unfiltered version of myself.</p>

<p>Amidst this altered state of time, space, and self, I found myself gravitating towards the practice of mindfulness and living in the moment. Without the usual distractions and pressures, each moment in the room held a magnified presence. I learned to observe my thoughts and feelings without judgment and to experience the fullness of each moment, whether it was filled with peace, discomfort, joy, or pain. With mindfulness, I became more conscious of how our perceptions and experiences constantly shape both my reality and my sense of self.</p>

<p>The white room became a space where the conventional boundaries of time and space dissolved, allowing for a deeper exploration of oneself. It fostered a mindfulness that illuminated the transient nature of reality and the importance of embracing each moment as it is. This experience redefined my understanding of existence, grounding me more firmly in the present and reshaping my perception of life beyond the room&#8217;s confines.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="the-psychological-tolls-and-triumphs"><strong>The Psychological Tolls and Triumphs</strong></h2>

<p>The experience within the confines of the white room brought with it a myriad of psychological challenges and struggles. The intense isolation and sensory deprivation tested the limits of my mental endurance, manifesting in periods of profound loneliness, anxiety, and, at times, a sense of despair. The absence of external feedback and interaction led to moments where self-doubt and existential questioning loomed large, challenging my mental fortitude.</p>

<p>Despite these challenges, the journey through the white room was punctuated with moments of mental triumph and resilience. One significant victory was the development of deepened self-awareness and acceptance. I learned to sit with my thoughts and emotions, however uncomfortable, and understand them as integral parts of my being. This acceptance became a source of strength, allowing me to face my inner fears and uncertainties with newfound courage.</p>

<p>The coping mechanisms I developed in the room were diverse and evolved over time. Meditation became a refuge, offering a sense of peace and grounding. I found solace in the power of imagination, creating intricate narratives and scenarios in my mind, which served as an escape and a means to keep my creativity alive. Physical exercise, though initially a way to maintain a routine, became essential for mental health, providing a sense of accomplishment and physical vitality.</p>

<p>Perhaps the most profound lesson learned about personal endurance was the importance of adaptability and the ability to find inner resources when external ones are unavailable. I discovered that endurance is not just about withstanding adversity but also about finding ways to grow and thrive within it. This period of enforced solitude taught me that resilience is as much about flexibility and creativity in coping strategies as it is about strength and perseverance.</p>

<p>The experience took a significant psychological toll on me, but there were also moments of triumph that showed how strong my mental fortitude was. The coping mechanisms and lessons learned about personal endurance in the white room have left an indelible mark on my understanding of myself and my capacity to navigate life&#8217;s challenges.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="insights-on-solitude-and-the-human-spirit"><strong>Insights on Solitude and the Human Spirit</strong></h2>

<p>The experience in the white room offered profound insights into the nature of solitude and its impact on the human spirit. Solitude, often perceived as a state to be avoided, revealed itself as a multifaceted condition. In its intense form within the room, solitude became a mirror, reflecting back the most honest parts of myself. It was a state where the noise of the external world faded, allowing for a deeper connection with my inner world. This experience reshaped my understanding of solitude, not just as physical aloneness but as a space for introspection, creativity, and self-realization.</p>

<p>The human spirit&#8217;s remarkable ability to adapt and find meaning in extreme conditions was another key insight from this journey. Faced with unyielding isolation and monotony, I discovered an inherent capacity to not only endure but also to extract meaning and growth from the experience. The human spirit, I learned, has incredible resilience and flexibility. It can find light in the darkest of places, create richness in simplicity, and forge a sense of purpose even in the most challenging circumstances.</p>

<p>This experience can be seen as a metaphor for personal challenges and growth. Just as I navigated the confines and solitude of the white room, we all encounter our own &#8216;white rooms&#8217; in life—situations that test our limits and force us to confront ourselves. These periods, whether they involve dealing with loss, facing uncertainty, or undergoing personal transformations, can feel confining and overwhelming. However, like my time in the room, these experiences are opportunities for profound personal growth. They compel us to look inward, reassess our priorities, and emerge with a deeper understanding of our strengths and capacities.</p>

<p>The journey through the white room is a testament to the human spirit&#8217;s resilience and its ability to find meaning in solitude. It serves as a reminder that our greatest trials can become sources of strength, self-knowledge, and transformation, shaping us in ways we never thought possible.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="how-to-apply-this-thought-experiment-to-creativity">How to Apply This Thought Experiment to Creativity</h2>

<p>In the seemingly endless expanse of the white room, a surprising revelation unfolded: creativity flourishes not in spite of constraints but often because of them.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="750" height="750" data-attachment-id="4437" data-permalink="https://nothans.com/thinking-inside-the-box/image-4-17" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/nothans.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/image-4.png?fit=1024%2C1024&amp;ssl=1" data-orig-size="1024,1024" data-comments-opened="0" data-image-meta="{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;0&quot;}" data-image-title="image-4" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-large-file="https://i0.wp.com/nothans.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/image-4.png?fit=750%2C750&amp;ssl=1" src="https://i0.wp.com/nothans.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/image-4.png?resize=750%2C750&#038;ssl=1" alt="" class="wp-image-4437" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/nothans.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/image-4.png?w=1024&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https://i0.wp.com/nothans.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/image-4.png?resize=300%2C300&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/nothans.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/image-4.png?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w, https://i0.wp.com/nothans.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/image-4.png?resize=768%2C768&amp;ssl=1 768w, https://i0.wp.com/nothans.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/image-4.png?resize=530%2C530&amp;ssl=1 530w, https://i0.wp.com/nothans.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/image-4.png?resize=750%2C750&amp;ssl=1 750w, https://i0.wp.com/nothans.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/image-4.png?resize=500%2C500&amp;ssl=1 500w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" /></figure>

<p>This is my attempt to explore the unexpected surge of creative energy that emerged from the depths of isolation and uniformity that I experienced during this thought experiment. As the outside world faded, my inner world blossomed, transforming the blank canvas of the room into a vivid landscape of imagination and innovation.</p>

<ol class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Embracing Constraints:</strong> In the white room scenario, the constraints of the environment forced me to look inward and explore new mental landscapes. Similarly, in creative endeavors, constraints or limitations can actually be a catalyst for innovation. Limitations force us to think differently, push boundaries, and come up with unique solutions.</li>

<li><strong>Solitude as a Creative Incubator:</strong> The solitude experienced in the white room can be paralleled with the solitude often required in creative processes. Solitude allows for deep concentration, uninterrupted thought processes, and the space to connect with one&#8217;s inner creative voice. It’s in these moments of isolation that ideas can germinate and grow.</li>

<li><strong>Internal Exploration for Inspiration:</strong> Just as introspection in the white room led to self-discovery and new insights, diving into one&#8217;s own experiences, emotions, and thoughts can provide a rich source of creative material. Personal introspection can lead to the creation of authentic and resonant work.</li>

<li><strong>Mindfulness and Observation:</strong> The heightened sense of awareness and mindfulness developed in the white room is crucial for creativity. Being observant, noticing details, and being fully present can lead to a deeper appreciation of the world around us, sparking creative ideas and perspectives.</li>

<li><strong>Resilience and Persistence:</strong> The mental resilience built in the white room is essential for creative pursuits. Creative work often involves challenges, setbacks, and failures. The ability to persevere, adapt, and find new pathways is key to sustaining creative endeavors.</li>

<li><strong>Imagination as a Tool:</strong> Just as imagination was a survival tool in the white room, it is the lifeblood of creativity. Embracing imagination, allowing the mind to wander, and exploring ‘what if’ scenarios can lead to groundbreaking creative ideas.</li>

<li><strong>Transformation of the Mundane:</strong> The white room experience shows how a mundane, empty space can transform into a world of possibilities. Similarly, in creativity, the most ordinary subjects or concepts can be transformed into extraordinary works through a unique perspective or approach.</li>
</ol>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="conclusion"><strong>Conclusion</strong></h2>

<p>The journey of &#8216;thinking inside the box&#8217; within the white room has been a profound exploration of self, revealing key insights and fostering significant personal growth. This experience has underscored the paradoxical power of confinement and isolation as catalysts for deep introspection, creativity, and resilience. The white room, initially a symbol of restriction, transformed into a space of boundless mental exploration and self-discovery. It taught me the value of solitude in understanding oneself, the remarkable adaptability of the human spirit, and the importance of finding meaning in even the most challenging circumstances.</p>

<blockquote class="wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow">
<p>&#8220;In the stark silence of the white room, I found not just isolation, but a canvas for the deepest introspection. It&#8217;s in the confines of our own &#8216;boxes&#8217; where the most profound discoveries of self are made.&#8221;</p>

<p>I encourage you to find value in your own &#8221;boxes&#8221;—those situations in life where you feel confined or isolated. Whether it&#8217;s a period of physical solitude, a challenging phase in your personal or professional life, or a moment of uncertainty, these experiences can be invaluable for growth and self-discovery. Embrace these opportunities to look inward, to confront and understand your fears, desires, and dreams. The insights you gain in these moments of introspection can be transformative, leading to a more authentic and resilient self.</p>

<p>Is &#8216;thinking inside the box&#8217; about enduring confinement? Maybe it&#8217;s about leveraging the unique conditions it presents for inner exploration. This journey highlights that true resilience and understanding often come from within, and that sometimes being confined in our own metaphorical white room can lead to the most profound personal insights and growth. Let us embrace these moments, for they hold the potential to reshape our understanding of ourselves and our place in the world.</p>

And as he stood there, watching the city below come alive with the energy of the network, he felt an insatiable curiosity stirring within him. The time had come to delve deeper into the heart of the planetary neural network, to unravel its enigmatic nature and unlock the boundless potential that lay hidden within.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="discovery">Discovery</h2>

<p>Late one evening, as Dr. WJ Hugh scrutinized the streams of data coursing through the planetary neural network, he noticed an anomaly that sent a shiver down his spine. A faint, but unmistakable signal seemed to be originating from a source beyond the solar system, threading its way through the labyrinth of Earth&#8217;s interconnected nodes. The signal pulsed with an eerie regularity, hinting at a deliberate intent rather than a random cosmic event.</p>

<p>Intrigued and somewhat unnerved, Dr. Hugh dedicated every waking moment to decoding the enigmatic signal. He assembled a team of top-tier scientists and engineers, each an expert in their respective field, to aid in his quest to understand the implications of this extraterrestrial transmission. Together, they worked tirelessly in the depths of the Global Nexus Tower, their minds fused in a singular purpose.</p>

<p>The more they investigated, the more they found themselves ensnared in a web of questions and uncertainty. Was this signal an attempt at communication by an advanced alien civilization? Or was it merely the echo of a long-vanished cosmic phenomenon? And, most importantly, what impact would it have on the planetary neural network that had become the very essence of human society?</p>

<p>As days turned into weeks, Dr. Hugh and his team began to unravel the intricate layers of the signal, decoding its patterns and uncovering the secrets it carried. Each discovery brought with it a profound sense of awe and trepidation, as they slowly came to realize that they were standing on the precipice of a revelation that would forever change the course of human history.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="750" height="750" data-attachment-id="3803" data-permalink="https://nothans.com/the-planetary-mind/the-planetary-mind-conflict" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/nothans.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/The-Planetary-Mind-Conflict.jpg?fit=768%2C768&amp;ssl=1" data-orig-size="768,768" data-comments-opened="0" data-image-meta="{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;0&quot;}" data-image-title="The-Planetary-Mind-Conflict" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-large-file="https://i0.wp.com/nothans.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/The-Planetary-Mind-Conflict.jpg?fit=750%2C750&amp;ssl=1" src="https://i0.wp.com/nothans.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/The-Planetary-Mind-Conflict.jpg?resize=750%2C750&#038;ssl=1" alt="" class="wp-image-3803" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/nothans.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/The-Planetary-Mind-Conflict.jpg?w=768&amp;ssl=1 768w, https://i0.wp.com/nothans.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/The-Planetary-Mind-Conflict.jpg?resize=300%2C300&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/nothans.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/The-Planetary-Mind-Conflict.jpg?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w, https://i0.wp.com/nothans.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/The-Planetary-Mind-Conflict.jpg?resize=530%2C530&amp;ssl=1 530w, https://i0.wp.com/nothans.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/The-Planetary-Mind-Conflict.jpg?resize=750%2C750&amp;ssl=1 750w, https://i0.wp.com/nothans.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/The-Planetary-Mind-Conflict.jpg?resize=500%2C500&amp;ssl=1 500w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" /></figure>
</div>

<p>Others, however, viewed the prospect of joining the interstellar network with trepidation and fear. They worried that by entwining Earth&#8217;s destiny with that of other civilizations, they would be ceding control and autonomy, leaving humanity vulnerable to the whims and machinations of unknown entities. They advocated for a more cautious approach, preserving Earth&#8217;s independence and focusing on strengthening the planetary neural network from within.</p>

<p>As the world grappled with this monumental decision, Dr. Hugh found himself thrust into the spotlight, his expertise and experience in the field of neural networks now more crucial than ever. He became a staunch advocate for integration, using his extensive knowledge to argue that joining the interstellar network would not only lead to unprecedented advancements for humanity, but also foster a spirit of unity and cooperation that transcended borders and cultures.</p>

<p>Dr. Hugh believed that by embracing the interstellar network, Earth could overcome the divisions that had long plagued its history, uniting as a single, harmonious entity in the pursuit of knowledge and enlightenment. <p>It&#8217;s now time for the last part of <a href="https://nothans.com/brent-forrester-tv-comedy-course" data-type="post" data-id="3218">Brent Forrester’s TV Comedy Course</a>: <strong>the dreaded rewrite</strong>.</p>

<p>Actually, this is one of the best parts. It&#8217;s way more complex and more stressful figuring out a storyline. The final rewrite is about punching up jokes, adding gags, and having fun with the script.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="652" height="503" data-attachment-id="3413" data-permalink="https://nothans.com/brent-forrester-tv-comedy-course-rewrite/image-6" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/nothans.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/image-6.png?fit=652%2C503&amp;ssl=1" data-orig-size="652,503" data-comments-opened="0" data-image-meta="{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;0&quot;}" data-image-title="image-6" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-large-file="https://i0.wp.com/nothans.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/image-6.png?fit=652%2C503&amp;ssl=1" src="https://i0.wp.com/nothans.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/image-6.png?resize=652%2C503&#038;ssl=1" alt="" class="wp-image-3413" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/nothans.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/image-6.png?w=652&amp;ssl=1 652w, https://i0.wp.com/nothans.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/image-6.png?resize=300%2C231&amp;ssl=1 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 652px) 100vw, 652px" /><figcaption>Brent Forrester&#8217;s Sitcom Writing Process</figcaption></figure>
</div>

<p>The final step in the process is a doozy: feedback with notes, rewrite, group rewrite, actor table read with notes, final rewrite, and shoot it. If you are by yourself, find a way to get a table read done. You could post on social media and quickly organize a read using Zoom. You get a lot of valuable feedback when others read the script aloud.</p>

<p>Punchup writers were consistently the most-paid writers in the industry. Punchup is a big part of rewriting. You can leverage several mechanisms for joke writing:</p>

<ol class="wp-block-list"><li>The contrast between the sacred (religion, babies, funerals, and old people) and the profane (sex, violence, and bathroom stuff)</li><li>Defiance of expectation</li><li>Escalation</li><li>Turn</li><li>Irony</li><li>Wordplay like puns (careful puns might not make people laugh), alliteration, rhyming, etc.</li><li>Visual comedy often works better &#8211; the reversal of scale</li><li>Mismatch of the attitude to the situation</li><li>Freezeframe jokes (things in the background)</li><li>The rule of three (two good ones and a bad one)</li><li>Strong sounds in words (plosives, K sounds)</li><li>Callback (a mechanical and contrived reference to a previous joke)</li></ol>

<p>The cold open must be funny. Just set up a comedic character in a situation. Find the easy path.</p>

<p>The principle of comedy that Brent shared comes from Wayne Federman: C.B.S. (clear, brief, and specific). If you were going to use the word animal in a joke, punch it up with a specific animal. Aardvark.</p>

<p>Whew. We made it through <a href="https://nothans.com/brent-forrester-tv-comedy-course" data-type="post" data-id="3218">six weeks</a> of classes from Brent Forrester. Each class was dense and compelling. I really appreciate Brent&#8217;s enthusiasm and encouragement along the way.</p>

<blockquote class="wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow"><p>&#8220;The act of completing something is miraculous and could be life-changing!&#8221;</p><cite>Brent Forrester</cite></blockquote>

<p>Set a deadline and get something done.</p>

<p>Oh, my. It is week five of <a href="https://nothans.com/brent-forrester-tv-comedy-course" data-type="post" data-id="3218">Brent Forrester’s TV Comedy Course</a>! Now we get to draft our script. Brent keeps on providing encouragement to commit to a deadline and to remind us that these are the fun parts of scriptwriting. I really love Brent&#8217;s positive take and how he keeps us moving through the process. Trust the process. Boomsauce!</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="572" height="482" data-attachment-id="3401" data-permalink="https://nothans.com/brent-forrester-tv-comedy-course-draft/image-4-2" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/nothans.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/image-4.png?fit=572%2C482&amp;ssl=1" data-orig-size="572,482" data-comments-opened="0" data-image-meta="{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;0&quot;}" data-image-title="Brent Forrester’s TV Comedy Course" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-large-file="https://i0.wp.com/nothans.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/image-4.png?fit=572%2C482&amp;ssl=1" src="https://i0.wp.com/nothans.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/image-4.png?resize=572%2C482&#038;ssl=1" alt="" class="wp-image-3401" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/nothans.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/image-4.png?w=572&amp;ssl=1 572w, https://i0.wp.com/nothans.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/image-4.png?resize=300%2C253&amp;ssl=1 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 572px) 100vw, 572px" /><figcaption>Brent Forrester Teaching Us How to Draft a Comedy Script</figcaption></figure>
</div>

<p>A lot of comedy script drafting is about writing dialogue writing. You are going to be writing a lot of words that your characters are going to say. <em>Tone</em> is important. Comedy writers talk about tone a lot in the writers&#8217; room. What is the tone of your script? Your characters? It is always a good idea to have <em>heart</em>. The tone is a spectrum from artificiality to naturalism. Tastemakers draw a lot of inspiration from The Larry Sanders Show. Watching the Larry Sanders Show is a great way to learn about comedy if you are analytical. Find comedy from the behavior over banter.</p>

<p>Now it is time to turn the outline into a script. Brent uses the <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://amzn.to/3TsJLeg" target="_blank">Final Draft</a> software to write the first draft of the script. He shows us the process live with one of the outlines from another writer in the class. This is indeed the fun part of scriptwriting.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large"><a href="https://amzn.to/3TsJLeg"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="750" height="455" data-attachment-id="3402" data-permalink="https://nothans.com/brent-forrester-tv-comedy-course-draft/image-5" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/nothans.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/image-5.png?fit=1983%2C1202&amp;ssl=1" data-orig-size="1983,1202" data-comments-opened="0" data-image-meta="{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;0&quot;}" data-image-title="image-5" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-large-file="https://i0.wp.com/nothans.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/image-5.png?fit=750%2C455&amp;ssl=1" src="https://i0.wp.com/nothans.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/image-5.png?resize=750%2C455&#038;ssl=1" alt="" class="wp-image-3402" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/nothans.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/image-5.png?resize=1024%2C621&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https://i0.wp.com/nothans.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/image-5.png?resize=300%2C182&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/nothans.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/image-5.png?resize=768%2C466&amp;ssl=1 768w, https://i0.wp.com/nothans.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/image-5.png?resize=1536%2C931&amp;ssl=1 1536w, https://i0.wp.com/nothans.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/image-5.png?resize=750%2C455&amp;ssl=1 750w, https://i0.wp.com/nothans.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/image-5.png?w=1983&amp;ssl=1 1983w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" /></a><figcaption>Final Draft Script Writing Software</figcaption></figure>
</div>

<p>Start by taking your outline and breaking the chunks down further. The dialogue will be interleaved. A script starts with the cold open. The biggest insight that Brent discovered through teaching this course is to have the cold open introduce a character, their core comedic contradiction, and create a scene that provokes the core comedic contraction into comic behavior. and put them in a scene that provokes them. The cold open does not have to tie into the story. The cold open is a comedy scene. Write dialogue as an improv actor, get into character, and try to say something. Improvise the lines and throw them down. Overcome resistance to get started. I couldn&#8217;t believe how hard it was to start writing dialogue. As soon as I started, I got stuck, but then when I got the first line out, I was fine. Give your punchline to the main character. There&#8217;s a unit of joke. The shorter it is the punchier it is. When writing a character think about polar opposites. Big words and grammar vs. short sentences. Put everything you are thinking up on the screen.</p>

<p>If you worked at it full-time, expect to take 40 hours to write a half-hour comedy script from the outline. Use the V+2 approach: vomit plus two. Vomit is about speed and quantity, not quality. Try to get from FADE IN to FADE OUT as soon as possible, then make two more passes. Break writing down into writing sessions of two hours at a time. You can get two scenes done in a session.</p>

<p>We just started the back half of <strong><a href="https://nothans.com/brent-forrester-tv-comedy-course" data-type="post" data-id="3218">Brent Forrester’s TV Comedy Course</a></strong>. This step in the process is outlining. We have brainstormed, pitched, carded, and now we need to give our script some structure before we write the first draft. Brent reminds us right away that it is important to think of scriptwriting as a process. And, the process gets more fun as you go along.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="750" height="464" data-attachment-id="3389" data-permalink="https://nothans.com/brent-forrester-tv-comedy-course-outline/image-3-2" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/nothans.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/image-3.png?fit=783%2C484&amp;ssl=1" data-orig-size="783,484" data-comments-opened="0" data-image-meta="{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;0&quot;}" data-image-title="Brent Forrester" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-large-file="https://i0.wp.com/nothans.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/image-3.png?fit=750%2C464&amp;ssl=1" src="https://i0.wp.com/nothans.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/image-3.png?resize=750%2C464&#038;ssl=1" alt="" class="wp-image-3389" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/nothans.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/image-3.png?w=783&amp;ssl=1 783w, https://i0.wp.com/nothans.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/image-3.png?resize=300%2C185&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/nothans.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/image-3.png?resize=768%2C475&amp;ssl=1 768w, https://i0.wp.com/nothans.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/image-3.png?resize=750%2C464&amp;ssl=1 750w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" /><figcaption>Brent Forrester Teaching Us About Comedy Script Outlines</figcaption></figure>

<p>Endings are critical. They help you write towards a goal. Sitcoms work when there is a fun, family dynamic. The endings help the audience realize that the journey was worth it. So, spend some time thinking about endings before you dive right in. There are common ending types for TV: the heart scene (ahem Full House), the heart scene obscured (low stakes, natural, and unspoken), the device ending (the A and B story resolve together), the voice-over ending (all of Modern Family episodes, common-denominator lessons), the &#8220;failed but won&#8221; scene (Ted Lasso used it for a season-ending), and a surprise ending (Fleabag did this very effectively for the pilot and the season). </p>

<p>Outlining is transcribing the cards (and their order) to an outline script. The top of the card becomes the slugline.</p>

<p>It&#8217;s already week three of the <strong><a href="https://nothans.com/brent-forrester-tv-comedy-course" data-type="post" data-id="3218">Brent Forrester’s TV Comedy Course</a></strong>. This week&#8217;s class was all about cards. Using cards is a technique to break a script down into parts. This takes a complex outcome and it gets it down to manageable parts. Once things are on cards, you can move things around visually. You can do big structural changes without rewrites.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="750" height="469" data-attachment-id="3366" data-permalink="https://nothans.com/brent-forrester-tv-comedy-course-cards/cards" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/nothans.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/cards.jpg?fit=1159%2C724&amp;ssl=1" data-orig-size="1159,724" data-comments-opened="0" data-image-meta="{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;Hans&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;1665138007&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;0&quot;}" data-image-title="cards" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-large-file="https://i0.wp.com/nothans.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/cards.jpg?fit=750%2C469&amp;ssl=1" src="https://i0.wp.com/nothans.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/cards.jpg?resize=750%2C469&#038;ssl=1" alt="" class="wp-image-3366" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/nothans.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/cards.jpg?resize=1024%2C640&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https://i0.wp.com/nothans.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/cards.jpg?resize=300%2C187&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/nothans.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/cards.jpg?resize=768%2C480&amp;ssl=1 768w, https://i0.wp.com/nothans.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/cards.jpg?resize=750%2C469&amp;ssl=1 750w, https://i0.wp.com/nothans.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/cards.jpg?w=1159&amp;ssl=1 1159w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" /><figcaption>Brent Forrester’s TV Comedy Course: Cards</figcaption></figure>

<p>I have always been fascinated by using cards for TV show and movie scripts. I follow <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://twitter.com/TomSchnauz/status/1554912430831988736/photo/1" target="_blank">Thomas Schnauz</a>, writer/producer for Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, on Twitter and he occasionally posts the cards for his episodes. This process seems to scale to any level of complexity.</p>

<p>As you know, I have been taking <a href="https://nothans.com/brent-forrester-tv-comedy-course" data-type="post" data-id="3218">Brent Forrester’s TV Comedy Course</a>. It&#8217;s now week two and we are talking about <em>pitching</em>. Brent reminds us that we need to be analytical and take comedy seriously. He tries to give us the most concrete process possible. Writing a script is really hard, but each step in the process is not as difficult.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="750" height="378" data-attachment-id="3356" data-permalink="https://nothans.com/brent-forrester-tv-comedy-course-pitching/brent-forrester-pitching" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/nothans.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/Brent-Forrester-Pitching.jpg?fit=892%2C450&amp;ssl=1" data-orig-size="892,450" data-comments-opened="0" data-image-meta="{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;0&quot;}" data-image-title="Brent Forrester Pitching" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-large-file="https://i0.wp.com/nothans.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/Brent-Forrester-Pitching.jpg?fit=750%2C378&amp;ssl=1" src="https://i0.wp.com/nothans.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/Brent-Forrester-Pitching.jpg?resize=750%2C378&#038;ssl=1" alt="" class="wp-image-3356" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/nothans.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/Brent-Forrester-Pitching.jpg?w=892&amp;ssl=1 892w, https://i0.wp.com/nothans.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/Brent-Forrester-Pitching.jpg?resize=300%2C151&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/nothans.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/Brent-Forrester-Pitching.jpg?resize=768%2C387&amp;ssl=1 768w, https://i0.wp.com/nothans.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/Brent-Forrester-Pitching.jpg?resize=750%2C378&amp;ssl=1 750w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" /><figcaption>Brent Forrester’s TV Comedy Course: Pitching</figcaption></figure>

<p>Pitching is about telling the story, out loud to others as many times as you can. The act of saying the story out loud as a pitch will help you understand what is working, what doesn&#8217;t work, and what gets a reaction. The story does not have to include comedy at this phase. There are plenty of opportunities to punch up the story. A &#8220;Goldilocks&#8221; is a written down form of the story. If you are writing a new comedy pilot, first pitch the show&#8217;s story by setting up the world and the main characters, then pitch the pilot episode&#8217;s story. A new comedy pilot pitch to a network should also include a deck of photos, characters, and visual elements to help establish this world that you are creating and inspire how you are going to make this a series. Spec writers can focus on the episode&#8217;s story since it is set in a known world. Be animated during your pitch. You are telling a story, act it out a bit.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="elements-of-a-story">Elements of a Story</h3>

<p>Story is generally about two people: one with a goal and the other with opposition to the other. There are five keywords to help develop a story.</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list"><li><strong>Goals</strong> &#8211; Something that a character wants to do. Need goals to create a story. Clear goals work the best.</li><li><strong>Stakes</strong> &#8211; To build empathy with the characters, you need to have stakes. Think about how high the stakes can go. Raise the stakes.</li><li><strong>Conflict</strong> &#8211; Establish conflict between your characters. A story is a conflict between the two main characters and the B story is just another conflict between two secondary characters.</li><li><strong>Escalation</strong> &#8211; Layer onto the premise multiple times.</li><li><strong>Ending</strong> &#8211; Twist the audience&#8217;s expectations and resolve the conflict.</li></ul>

<p>A half-hour comedy episode has multiple escalations played out as act breaks whereas a comedy sketch is compressed starting with a premise, at least two escalations, and a twist.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="pitching-notes">Pitching Notes</h3>

<ul class="wp-block-list"><li>Name your main character and use that name in your pitch. Have a few things to say about the character.</li><li>Tell us about the world they are in.</li><li>Find something you like about someone else&#8217;s pitch and reflect it back. This makes you a great pitch partner.</li><li>You are writing for performers. Write what they love to perform. Make the contractions &#8220;performable&#8221;.</li></ul>

<p>The first part of <a href="https://nothans.com/brent-forrester-tv-comedy-course">Brent Forrester’s TV Comedy Course</a> is about brainstorming. Brent gave us a great sense of how idea generation works in a real writer&#8217;s room and how to get started with a scene. Brent suggests finding characters or events from real life and making a personal connection with what you are writing. Trust that your personal perspective will lead you to the funny, not the other way around.</p>

<p>Brent taught the first class over Zoom from the Bahamas while being threatened by a hurricane. A lot of people in my circles are hating meetings and webinars on Zoom, but for me, &#8220;Zoom&#8221; meetings have given me access to folks and training that I couldn&#8217;t have pulled off in person. I appreciate what Brent is doing with the class and what a remote meeting can provide.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="750" height="432" data-attachment-id="3342" data-permalink="https://nothans.com/brent-forrester-tv-comedy-course-brainstorming/image-1-2" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/nothans.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/image-1.png?fit=3745%2C2158&amp;ssl=1" data-orig-size="3745,2158" data-comments-opened="0" data-image-meta="{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;0&quot;}" data-image-title="Brent Forrester’s TV Comedy Course on Zoom" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-large-file="https://i0.wp.com/nothans.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/image-1.png?fit=750%2C432&amp;ssl=1" src="https://i0.wp.com/nothans.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/image-1.png?resize=750%2C432&#038;ssl=1" alt="" class="wp-image-3342" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/nothans.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/image-1.png?resize=1024%2C590&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https://i0.wp.com/nothans.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/image-1.png?resize=300%2C173&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/nothans.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/image-1.png?resize=768%2C443&amp;ssl=1 768w, https://i0.wp.com/nothans.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/image-1.png?resize=1536%2C885&amp;ssl=1 1536w, https://i0.wp.com/nothans.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/image-1.png?resize=2048%2C1180&amp;ssl=1 2048w, https://i0.wp.com/nothans.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/image-1.png?resize=750%2C432&amp;ssl=1 750w, https://i0.wp.com/nothans.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/image-1.png?w=2250&amp;ssl=1 2250w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" /><figcaption><a href="https://nothans.com/brent-forrester-tv-comedy-course">Brent Forrester on Zoom</a></figcaption></figure>

<p>Here are some notes, tips, and takeaways from the brainstorming class.</p>

<p>Brent wanted us to feel the power of what we were doing. A whole bunch of us decided to meet on Zoom on a Saturday afternoon to learn about comedy writing. He set the context by talking about his origin story. Brent didn&#8217;t watch much or any TV growing up. He had a loose connection with Susan Harris who become Brent&#8217;s mentor. He got started by creating a writing sample which is a spec script of an existing show.</p>

<p>Three lessons from Susan Harris:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list"><li>Silly isn&#8217;t funny!</li><li>Write the way people talk.</li><li>Write about what&#8217;s difficult for you even if it&#8217;s painful and trust that it will come out funny.</li></ul>

<p>Brent&#8217;s real education came from joining the writer&#8217;s room of The Simpsons. This is where he watched 100 episodes of the show and analyzed why jokes worked. He called this &#8220;autodidactic&#8221; learning and he just had to get in there and break everything down that others did by himself. </p>

<p>First Writing Hack: Writing is a solo act and this makes the process difficult. Brent recommended that we solve this problem by involving another writer. Having someone else involved in your work will help with motivation, quality, and growth as a writer. Related: involving any other person, writer or not, will help you. Tell that other person the story that you want to write. When you tell the story out loud something magical happens. What is confusing or moving or if there is an ending? The story is important. Also, learn how to be a good partner to others. Really listen to other writers when they are pitching. Reflect back to them something good about someone else&#8217;s pitch. Listen closely to the feedback. Be open to critical feedback.</p>

<p>First Writing Choice (for the class): Are you writing a spec script for an existing show or an original pilot script for a half-hour comedy show? The choice is important because you want to be writing about what you want to write about. Writing is hard enough so you should pick something that interests you and that want to explore. This will increase your odds of finishing a script.</p>

<p>Deadline Hack: Set a deadline. Always be writing towards a deadline. You will either be on time, early, or late. Your brain will start to have to wonder how you are going to hit that deadline. You will start breaking down the project into parts and making some progress. Brent asked the class to share a sacred vow. We all agreed to write a script in six weeks. We didn&#8217;t agree on quality, funniness, or completeness.</p>

<blockquote class="wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow"><p>Deadlines are magical. </p><cite><a href="https://nothans.com/brent-forrester-tv-comedy-course">Brent Forrester</a></cite></blockquote>

<p>Where to start? A great comedy must have at least one great character. So, what is a great character? David Brent from The Office was inspired by a real-world boss who thinks he was great, but he was not. The character was created to mock this guy. Observation is a great way to find a great character. A great character In one word is a <strong>contradiction</strong>. A single, interesting contradiction. Tony Soprano, for example, is a mobster but in therapy.</p>

<p>Brent&#8217;s trademark formula is to find a character&#8217;s core comic contradiction<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />. The three C&#8217;s. A comic character that is trying to come across one way but comes across another way. Then, you can layer onto the character by adding to the core contradiction. These are layers that make the character interesting. Write some background details about your character to provide a large pool of inspiration for the script and interactions. And, by the way, big funny moments by comedy actors are when they go from extremes in a split second.</p>

<p>Secondary characters exist to trigger your primary characters. They provoke the core comedy contradiction of your main character. Brent talked about King of the Hill. Hank Hill is the main character. Every other character like Bobby Hill, Hank&#8217;s son, is there to provoke Hank and challenge Hank&#8217;s viewpoint. All of the comedy comes from Hank believing one thing and then being pulled out of it by the other characters.</p>

<p>Structures of half-hour comedies:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list"><li>Central comic character model</li><li>Center and eccentrics model &#8211; observation from the inside</li></ul>

<p>A Promise from Brent: Writing gets fun the further along you are in the process. Brent promises.</p>

<p>Homework: Write a document about your primary and one secondary chracter. Watch two episodes of a half-hour comedy show that you like. Write down one of the scenes verbatim and tease it apart. Be analytical. Try to figure it out. Why is it funny? Why do you like it? Why is it funny?</p>

<p>Also, I learned that I need to watch Veep.</p>

<p>Everyone has a few extra hours a week&#8230; right? If I do a little less YouTube watching and a little less <a href="https://nothans.com/win-at-dfs-by-optimizing-your-fantasy-football-lineups" data-type="post" data-id="3302">fantasy football</a>, I can fit in <a href="https://www.brentforrester.com/webinar" data-type="URL" data-id="https://www.brentforrester.com/webinar">Brent Forrester&#8217;s TV Comedy Course</a>. This webinar asks me to invest four hours per week for six weeks. The first class starts September 17, 2022. See you there!?</p>

<p>Here&#8217;s an outline of <em>Brent Forrester&#8217;s TV Comedy Course</em>:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list"><li>Class One: <strong><a href="https://nothans.com/brent-forrester-tv-comedy-course-brainstorming" data-type="post" data-id="3340">Brainstorming</a></strong></li><li>Class Two: <strong><a href="https://nothans.com/brent-forrester-tv-comedy-course-pitching" data-type="post" data-id="3353">Pitching</a></strong></li><li>Class Three: <strong><a href="https://nothans.com/brent-forrester-tv-comedy-course-cards" data-type="post" data-id="3364">Cards</a></strong></li><li>Class Four: <strong><a href="https://nothans.com/brent-forrester-tv-comedy-course-outline" data-type="post" data-id="3380">Outline</a></strong></li><li>Class Five: <strong><a href="https://nothans.com/brent-forrester-tv-comedy-course-draft" data-type="post" data-id="3399">Draft</a></strong></li><li>Class Six: <strong><a href="https://nothans.com/brent-forrester-tv-comedy-course-rewrite" data-type="post" data-id="3409">Rewrite</a></strong></li></ul>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="what-sold-me">What sold me?</h2>

<p>I happened to upon Brent Forrester&#8217;s talk from the WGFestival 2021: <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v3BjBPKzKEs" target="_blank">Fundamentals of the Comedy Pilot</a>. It was a motivating session and compelled me to look closer at Brent Forrester&#8217;s method for TV comedy.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="about-brent-forrester">About Brent Forrester</h2>

<p>Brent Forrester won his first Comedy Writing Emmy at age 25 for his work on &#8220;The Ben Stiller Show.&#8221;&nbsp; He went on to write for &#8220;The Simpsons,&#8221; helped launch &#8220;King of The Hill,&#8221; and was a writer, producer, and director at NBC&#8217;s &#8220;The Office&#8221; for seven seasons.&nbsp; He&#8217;s written for &#8220;Late Night with Conan,&#8221;&nbsp; HBO&#8217;s &#8220;Mr. Show,&#8221; and &#8220;The Larry Sanders Show,&#8221; and continues to work as a Head Writer on Netflix shows like Judd Apatow&#8217;s &#8220;Love&#8221; and Steve Carrell&#8217;s &#8220;Space Force,&#8221; along with Amazon shows like Greg Daniel&#8217;s &#8220;Upload&#8221; and &#8220;People of Earth.&#8221;&nbsp;</p>

<p>When Brent was running the Writers Room at &#8220;The Office,&#8221; he began developing a system to get a script from &#8220;concept&#8221; to &#8220;shooting draft&#8221; in three weeks.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="part-of-my-journey">Part of my journey</h2>

<p>I will share my journey as I take the comedy writing class. I am not sure if I will write a TV comedy pilot, but I am furthering my commitment to write every day. I identified as a writer for about 10 years and realized that I wasn&#8217;t writing very much. About three years ago, I changed that. I started writing every day no matter what. Sometimes I wrote jokes or philosophical musings, but I wrote something. I also committed to blogging here every week. I am not writing for an audience, I am just making writing a <strong>habit</strong>.</p>

<p><strong>Writing is hard.</strong></p>

<p>I am late to the party on this one. I spent most of my life thinking that I actually read <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://amzn.to/3dNceeM" target="_blank">Mary Shelley&#8217;s Frankenstein</a>. But, all of my memories of the book were actually from movies, pop culture, and our collective misconceptions. So, I actually read the book this summer. I really didn&#8217;t know anything about the book and I am glad that I did.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><a href="https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/first-edition-of-mary-shelleys-frankenstein-breaks-records-at-auction-180978724/"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="523" height="595" data-attachment-id="3111" data-permalink="https://nothans.com/have-you-actually-read-mary-shelleys-frankenstein/frankenstein-books" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/nothans.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/frankenstein-books.jpg?fit=523%2C595&amp;ssl=1" data-orig-size="523,595" data-comments-opened="0" data-image-meta="{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;Hans&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;0&quot;}" data-image-title="original frankenstein books" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-large-file="https://i0.wp.com/nothans.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/frankenstein-books.jpg?fit=523%2C595&amp;ssl=1" src="https://i0.wp.com/nothans.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/frankenstein-books.jpg?resize=523%2C595&#038;ssl=1" alt="" class="wp-image-3111" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/nothans.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/frankenstein-books.jpg?w=523&amp;ssl=1 523w, https://i0.wp.com/nothans.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/frankenstein-books.jpg?resize=264%2C300&amp;ssl=1 264w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 523px) 100vw, 523px" /></a><figcaption>The original copy of Shelley&#8217;s <em>Frankenstein: or, the Modern Prometheus</em> sold at a Christie’s auction in 2021 for $1.17 million.</figcaption></figure>
</div>

<p>I am not going to spoil the book in today&#8217;s blog post. I will be doing that over a series of posts about Frankenstein. The only thing that I am going to do today is to dispel one big misconception from the book. I can already hear the literary nerds jumping in to say what it is&#8230;</p>

<p><strong>Frankenstein is not the name of the monster. </strong>Frankenstein is the name of the person who contructs the monster. The monster, or the creature, is not named in the book. Now, go read it. It&#8217;s in the public domain. You don&#8217;t have to spend <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/first-edition-of-mary-shelleys-frankenstein-breaks-records-at-auction-180978724/" target="_blank">$1.17 million</a> to read it. Mary Shelley&#8217;s Frankenstein is literally available on any platform for free. The audiobook is about 7 hours. Binge it.</p>
