They were right: the Bambu Lab P1S was plug-and-play. The 3D printer was calibrated. It then asked me to try a print with one of the built-in 3D models. George and I decided to go with the model scrapper. That’s meta. Making something with a 3D printer for the 3D printer. Then, we turned to Maker World and found a cool F1 fidget toy. It turned out well. My confidence grew. It was time to go big.

I have a Godzilla 70th edition pinball machine by Stern Pinball. It is my favorite theme. The pinball game is spectacular, one of the top-rated pinball machines of all time. The 70th edition has black and white… and red artwork. One thing that I always noticed is how punny Godzilla is in the machine. Godzilla is ticked in the corner. I searched around for mods and found some options. They all have a Pinside waitlist, and I didn’t get my name called after six months, so it is time to make my own.

My goal was to have a Godzilla model inthe game that was slightly larger than Mechagodzilla. Even Mechagodzilla got more prominence than Godzilla. I found someone on Printables who shared my challenge and goal. This is also a big part of what has changed in the 3D printing hobby. You are standing on the shoulders of giants. There are so many places to find 3D models, inspiration, tutorials, and videos. No excuses at this point.

First Step: Print the Godzilla 3D Model

I downloaded the STL files and imported them into BambuStudio. It was a straightforward process. I had to add supports. I recommend trees. Move from the prepare to the preview tab to start the slicing. I picked Bambu Lab Jade White PLA Basic filament. I checked out the 3D preview for a bit and hit Build. It said it would take 6 hours, and it did.

Second Step: Prepare the model for painting

I removed all of the support trees and lightly sanded Godzilla with 400-grit sandpaper. After that, I sprayed a black primer on the model. This will help acrylic paint adhere to PLA. This is a fantastic thing. I tried painting the raw PLA, but it didn’t work at all. Let it dry.

Third Step: Paint the Godzilla Model

This was a fun part for me. I had a lot of apprehension about painting it. I was going to run it. Then I realized that, at worst, I was six hours away from another model. At best, I prime it again. I chose Gray, Metallic Silver, and Metallic Black paints. The last model I painted was my Yoda model from the 80s, my toy Yoda. Classic joke.

After I finished it, I sprayed a UV-resistant top coat. It dried quickly. I am not sure if this step was needed, but I wanted to make sure everything was protected. I loved how it turned out.

Fourth Step: Install Godzilla…

The tiny Godzilla sits in the back corner, held in place with a couple of screws. The 3D model came with a base plate. I put that in first, checked clearances, and used two-sided Gorilla tape to hold Godzilla down to the baseplate. The Gorilla two-sided tape is also magical. It has held all of my mods in place over the years.

A spotlight shines on Godzilla, illuminating him during specific game modes. I adjusted it since this model is so huge. Looks awesome.

Fifth Step: PROFIT!

This 3D printer is just printing money. Okay, okay. I am getting ahead of myself. This was my third print. I went big, and I felt confident that this would work. It was fun to go the whole way. I overcame some fears of painting a model. I did it with the help of literally millions of people sharing on forums, YouTube, and 3D modeling sites.

What an amazing community. Hobby.

I found a King Kong figure on Pinball Life. My trick is to use Gorilla mounting tape to bond figures to the pinball plastics. I think it is kind of appropriate to use the Gorilla brand here. Irony aside, it’s the best tape I used for modding pinball machines.

I cut two squares for King Kong’s feet and pressed each square firmly for two minutes. Then, I removed the backing and placed it on the protector plastic near the powerlines area, again holding it down for two minutes. This seemed to fit and not mess with the ball path. It turned out marvelous.

Update: May 2025

Well, I bought the Stern King Kong Pinball machine and put it next to Godzilla. Although it turned out the games are unrelated, I still love both themes.

We don’t know much about the new pinball machine from Stern, but we know more will be revealed on January 3, 2025. We know there will be three models: pro, premium, and limited edition.

The teaser video gives a glimpse into the main mech of the machine. It appears to be an angry dragon with three hit switches.

It might be a rumor, but I hear that the design comes from Brian Eddy. Brian has created two of the top 10 pinball machines of all time. Medieval Madness and Attach From Mars.

DUNGEONS & DRAGONS Popularity

Every year, I go to Gen Con. This is a board game convention with a pen-and-paper RPG convention at its heart. Over the decades, I have watched the small side rooms get filled with more and more DnD players. I could tell it was getting increasingly popular, but I couldn’t imagine how much in recent years.

Over at Reddit, I found some analysis from Fibbonacci4242. They mapped DnD interest over time and overlayed some key events. A combination of podcasts like Critical Role and TV shows like Stranger Things accelerated the interest in DUNGEONS & DRAGONS.

DUNGEONS & DRAGONS seems like the perfect theme for pinball. I am excited to see how Brian Eddy innovates here. DnD offers a lot of story and game mechanisms to explore.

Update: DUNGEONS & DRAGONS The Tyrant’s Eye Pinball at CES 2025

Join Zach Sharpe and Seth Davis as they unveil the newest Stern Pinball creation, DUNGEONS & DRAGONS: The Tyrant’s Eye, at CES 2025 in Las Vegas. GeekGamerTV shows the first look at the world of epic adventures, intricate playfields, and cutting-edge pinball design.

The Uncanny X-Men pinball game from Stern Pinball features Wolverine, Professor X, Cyclops, Storm, Colossus, Beast, Rogue, Gambit, Nightcrawler, Jean Grey, Bishop, Kitty Pryde, and Magneto, along with a supporting cast of allies and foes. The adventure takes players to familiar X-Men locations, including the Danger Room (the Jack Danger Room?), Beast’s Lab, the X-Mansion, and Genosha. Players will also interact with fabled X-Men devices like Cerebro and the X-Jet.

The Uncanny X-Men pinball machine is set in the The Days of Future Past storyline in Marvel’s Earth-811 timeline. This is why they are making exactly 811 Limited Edition (LE) machines. The LE model includes the new speaker lighting system with X-Men-themed game effects, a “Danger Room” inspired mirrored backglass, reflective foil “Future vs. Past” high-definition cabinet decals with artwork by Zombie Yeti, exclusive “Sentinel Armor” powder-coated pinball armor, custom designer-autographed bottom arch, upgraded audio system, anti-reflection pinball playfield glass, shaker motor, a sequentially numbered plaque, a signed Certificate of Authenticity, and a digital Insider Connected LE owner’s badge on registration.

The playfield looks very unique. The Danger Room is set to the side of the main flippers. To get the ball over there, it looks like the ball crosses behind the flippers. I do not know of a game like that. This will feel fresh right out of the gate. I look forward to playing it as soon as it starts shipping.

Stern Pinball is teasing a new John Wick-themed pinball machine that will be released on May 7, 2024. Stern added an entry to its store page, allowing people to contact them for the availability of a limited edition of the new machine.

On X, someone asked if Keanu Reeves would be doing the voice for the in-game callouts. Stern replied that could not confirm or deny at this point.

Stern Pinball released a John Wick Story Trailer video on their YouTube page. They are further building the anticipation of a John Wick-themed pinball machine release anytime now.

Stern Pinball announced on Insider Connected that they are delaying the launch of the James Bond pinball machine out of respect to the passing of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II.

Stern Pinball released the full game trailer for the new James Bond 007 pinball games featuring three different models: pro, premium, and limited edition.

Pintastic is a pinball convention hosted in Sturbridge, MA. It’s definitely the largest pinball event in New England. Pintastic offers a huge selection of pinball machines set to free play, an exhibit hall, seminars, and pinball tournaments.

Jersey Jack Panel

Everyone wanted to learn more about the Toy Story 4 pinball machine from Jersey Jack Pinball. Besides a few on-location places, Toy Story 4 was making its big debut at Pintastic 2022. Jersey Jack Pinball hosted a panel and pizza party and had four of its new game set to free play. Each machine drew long lines. I got to play it about 10 times over the course of the weekend. It is a smooth shooter and reminds me a bit of Pat Lawlor’s first Jersey Jack Pinball game, Dialed In.

Homebrew Game Developers Panel

Homebrew pinball has exploded in recent years. The tech to build pinball machines is getting more accessible thanks to systems like The Mission Pinball Framework, 100% open source software for powering real pinball machines. Two homebrew pinball game designers have found fulltime employment at pinball companies in the past year. This featured a three person panel talking about their homebrew pinball design experience and fielding questions from the audience.

The panelists also had some games that you could play in the game hall. I really enjoyed Sonic Spinball and Haunted Cruise.

Meet and Greet

The designers and artists behind some of my favorite games were in attendance. Pintastic featured a meet and greet session with Pinball VIP guests. About 200 pinheads lined up to get posters and parts signed. I met John Bord, the diesner of my Iron Man pinball machine and Steve Ritchie, the designer of Airborne Avenger, Star Trek: The Next Generation, and Spider-Man.

To make this mod, you must disassemble your pinball machine to get access to the flipper buttons. First, open the coin door and release the lockdown bar latches. Then, pull out the lockdown bar, and carefully slide out the playfield glass. Lift the playfield up and rest it on the backbox. Just take your time. If something feels caught, slowly reverse your steps and start again.

Loosen the nut that holds the flipper button. I recommend that you use an adjustable monkey wrench to grip the edges of the nut. Twist out the old button and insert the new one. Replace the nut and enjoy your upgraded flipper buttons.

Pinball machines are indeed machines. They need regular maintenance, cleaning, and small adjustments. You are hurling a steel ball at metal, rubber, and plastic, and things are bound to happen. One day, I noticed that a ball kept getting stuck in my machine. I took the glass off and took a closer look. I noticed some chewed up rubber sticking out. One of the rings had split apart. The rubber rings help protect metal parts in the game, add some energy to the ball, and also protect the ball itself. If your ball gets scratched up, the ball will scratch up your playfield and cause other maintenance problems. So, it is a great idea to clean, change out rings, and replace the pinballs on a regular basis.

I first turned to the Iron Man Pinball manual and then watched some YouTube videos on replacing the rubber rings. I did some research to build up some confidence with removing the covers and taking out some screws. I came across Titan Pinball. They had everything that I needed including a new t-shirt.

Titan Pinball had every ring for every game in many colors and sizes. I choose yellow. They also have a cool feature where users can share their maintenance kits, other users can comment and make changes to build their own kit. By letting the pinball community help out, Titan Pinball has the most comprehensive ring sizing than any other place on the web. I discovered that the original ring installed was not the right size which caused it to prematurely fail. There were small discrepancies in the manual and the forums, but the community helped me solve the mystery and over come my trepidation about opening up the machine and doing my first pinball maintenance. Game on!

Insider Connected Platform

So, what’s the deal? A pinball machine is a machine. It lives inside the home or at an arcade or, more likely these days, a taproom. The machine takes people’s money in exchange for gameplay. It’s a wonderful thing. If the machine goes down, the revenue stops. Disappointment sets in. But, when the machine is working, everything is great. Everyone wins. People are happy to play while enjoying beverages and food, the operator is making back their investment on the machines, and the establishment gets faithful customers. When I start working on the Internet of Things (IoT) back in 2007, I used to make the same talking points about appliances, industrial equipment, and heating/cooling systems. IoT has a role in embedded software updates, predictive maintenance, customer retention, and interconnecting services that benefit operators, owners, and customers. With the release of the Stern Pinball Insider Connected Platform, they appear to be thinking about what’s next for their pinball games by building a platform that leverages a lot of the value and impact that IoT brings to the table, so to speak.

My Experience With the Stern Pinball Insider Connected Platform

Since Stern’s announcement, I have been excited to try it out for myself. The first pinball game that includes the hardware that allows a pinball machine to connect to the internet and to the platform is Godzilla! Using a retrofit kit, some older pinball machines by Stern Pinball will be able to be upgraded and leverage the platform. I used Pinball Map to find a location that has the Godzilla machine and headed out into the real world. I found Godzilla at The Double Bull Taphouse and Grill in Peabody, MA (Peabody is one of the fun Massachusetts town names that separate the locals from the tourists). I got to play Godzilla for about an hour before a line started forming behind me. This was enough time to try out the platform, check into the machine, take a selfie without feeling self-conscious, and learn some of the rules of the Godzilla pinball game.

You start by signing up for an Insider Connected account at Stern Pinball. Select LOGIN in the top-right corner of the homepage, and then select, “Create a free account.” These steps will kick off the sign-up process.

What you are doing is setting up a profile for you as a player of Stern’s games. This is your player identity where you can set preferences, track your high scores, see achievements, and access your QR code. This QR code is how you will check into a pinball machine that you play. Right now, the only way to get access to your QR code is via the website. I imagine that native mobile apps are coming, but I am only guessing.

The game actually has a QR code scanner. You put your QR code on your phone’s screen and hold it above the scanner. I found this to be pretty easy and connects quickly. Your player initials show up on the machine and you can use the flipper buttons to log out or arrange the players.

I played Godzilla 15 times with a high score of 103,305,640 points. I accurately know this data since the website tracks the gameplay. The website also keeps track of where I played, achievements that I have unlocked, and people that I have connected with. I thought my score was good until I watched some get over 650,000,000 points on their fourth try. This set the grand champion score on the machine and colored me impressed. I learned a few tricks watching them play.

Everything worked as advertised. It is brand new and will soon offer more features for players, operators, and the locations that host the machines. I can only imagine what is coming next.

Some Ideas

Inspired by over a decade of IoT development for hundreds of customers and millions of products, I have some ideas on where this can go. I am sure Stern Pinball is thinking about some of these but is trying things out slowly and make sure that they get the experience right. I always think of the Internet of Things like the Internet of Nouns. In this case: players, operators, and locations.

• Players: Players will be able to metagame. This is the game outside of the game. They will be able to play against remote players and join tournaments at other locations. Players will be able to tweak parts of the game, maybe set rules that make the game easier or more challenging based on their preference.
• Operators: Operators will be able to make sure that the machine is running the latest code and running in operating condition. WIth the right sensors reporting data to the internet, you could do predictive maintaince and always have the machine running in tip-top shape during operating hours. Replacement parts could be on the ready for planned downtime.
• Locations: Once everything is connected, locations will be able to offer their products as prizes and incentives to keep playing. How about a free appetizer or drink if you get 20 loops on Gidzilla? Pinball machines have screens with ample ad space potential while their not being played.

I do recommend that Stern opens up access to the platform with an API and turns the player profiles into identities. Over time, everybody is going to try their hand at making a connected platform and it will leave players, operators, and locations in a lurch. They will have to support multiple platforms and will have to choose. Stern could have a first-mover advantage and if they open up their player identity management system could win. This is a lesson learned from what I experienced with consumer IoT products. In the beginning, there were many consumer IoT platforms, but it only really took off when a few started interoperating. APIs have the advantage of helping a community build integrations that are totally unexpected. If it was me, I would be allowing my subs on Twitch to control the light show or my flipper strength while I play for charity. If music licensing gets worked out, a pinball machine could double as a jukebox while it’s not in play.

Caution

Again, borrowing from my IoT experience, I have some words of caution. Although I have an optimistic feeling of what is coming for gaming, pinball, and IoT, I suggest going slow and make sure Stern solves problems that operators and locations may have while giving value to the players.

Managing updates is a nightmare. Think about your mobile phone. You have apps and operating system software. Something is probably out of date and you hold it in your hand every day. It doesn’t scale very nicely. Games will have versions, out-of-date code, different models, and then you will have many games to manage. Operators will manage many locations so it is easy to get things mixed up.

Things connected to the internet have inherent risks. Imagine a pinball machine bitcoin mining in the background without anything knowing about it. That is not even the worst thinning that I can imagine. Have a focus on security. Don’t spread yourself thin. The surface area becomes cyber attack vectors.

Plan for scale. This is going to be popular. As games get sold into homes using the new home edition model, people are going to use a connected platform in many interesting ways. Downtime will not be great. Leverage web services and cloud infrastructure that scale.

The Future

The future is here and it continually unfolds. I am excited to see what’s going to happen with pinball and IoT. It has been a fun time to be into pinball. The games are exciting, deeper, and throwbacks to older games. If you are old like me, I wouldn’t dismiss these new ideas too early. Let it breathe and let’s enjoy the ride together.
