I opened pack after pack, waiting for “Hans” to be featured as one of the names for a Garbage Pail Kid and wondering how it would be represented.

After getting to Series 6 of GPK, I finally got my wish.

Culture

Disney announced the release of the first card for the Lorcana trading card game at the D23 Expo. If you were one of the attendees you could pick this up at one of the booths. The first collectible card features Mickey Mouse illustrated by Nicholas Kole.

At the D23 Expo, Disney and Ravensburger released a promo card set featuring six cards from Lorcana in a sealed slipcase, as announced on Twitter. This is a Disney Expo-exclusive set of cards. Each card features the Disney Expo logo.

At the D23 Expo, people were able to get two different pins. One pin was issued to employees, and the other was offered as a promo at the Ravensburger booth.

Searching For Answers

I am trying to collect as much as I can from the FPG line of cards featuring the artwork from Bernie Wrightson. I research eBay, card lists, blogs, and websites to find some new things. I still have some remaining questions and looking for a few items. Contact me if you have some info or want to trade.

• I am looking for the “Gold Hologram” cards from series one. I have opened a lot of packs and have never come across one.
• I am looking for an uncut sheet of The Master of the Macabre series of cards from 1993.
• What were the HWDC Promo Cards made for? And, why are they 3.5″ x 3.5″ cards?

Sometimes you get an idea. Sometimes you figure something out on your own. In this case, I saw a comment on a Reddit thread on sleeving the Arkham Horror: The Card Game cards. Someone mentioned that the investigator’s card has the same height as the width of a regular card: 2.5″ (63.5mm).

My goal was to find a mini card sleeve for my investigator cards. Fantasy Flight Games provide sleeves for regular cards and mini cards. The regular-sized card sleeves have a myriad of styles and colors, while the mini sleeves come in one style: clear.

The standard Arkham Horror LCG card size is 2.5″ x 3.5″ (63.5mm x 88mm). The Arkham Horror investigator card size is 1.625″ x 2.4″ (41mm x 63mm). 

I like to use the solid color sleeves for my player cards and have the colors match the character classes:

• Guardian: Blue
• Seeker: Orange / Yellow
• Rogue: Green
• Mystic: Purple
• Survivor: Red
• Neutral: Gray

I have been creating a character and deck of cards for Jenny Barnes, a rogue class. The main class of cards have a green border, so I want to use green-backed card sleeves. I have never been able to find green-backed mini card sleeves, so I decided to make my own out of larger green sleeves.

Follow these steps to make your own investigator sleeves from full-sized card sleeves:

• Get some full-sized sleeves. I like the consistency and quality of the sleeves from Fantasy Flight Games and BCW.
• Insert the investigator card into the sleeve rotated 90 degrees

• Trim the excess sleeve with a sliding paper cutter. I prefer the Cricuit or Fiskars paper trimmers.

I love the results. I hope this hack saves you some time or money. Well, maybe not that, but at least your investigator’s sleeve will match your player card sleeves!

The latest game I have been playing is “Dominion” by Donald X. Vaccarino, published by Rio Grande Games in the United States. Dominion is a board game-style card game. In the box, you get a number of action cards, resource cards, and victory point cards. In each game, you pick 10 action cards, which will be common for all players. With resource cards like Copper, Gold, Silver, and Potions, you can buy action cards, resource cards, and victory point cards. At the end of the game you add up the victory point cards and the player with the most points wins the game. Each turn you can play an action card and/or buy cards if you have the right resources. Dominion starts with collecting actions and resources and finishes with a race to gain victory points. During the whole you are striking a balance with resources, actions, and victory points.

I love this game and my appeal for Dominion is threefold:

• It’s highly re-playable – with new expansion and card combinations, you can play a new game almost every time

• It’s really balanced – everyone has the same chances to get the common action cards, unlike a lot of other card games

• It has a lot of strategy – you have to adapt to how other people play, find good card combos, and know when to switch between gaining resources to gaining victory points

Digression…

You might be thinking, “Hans, I have not heard of this game before, what gives?” My quick reply would be, “There are a lot of games out there,” Hans said gamely. If you have grown up in the United States, there are a few games that everyone has been introduced to – Monopoly, Sorry, The Game of Life, Candy Land – if you are “lucky” you might have played Risk, Scrabble, Stratego, and Trivial Pursuit. In general, you will notice that US favorite games are mostly luck based, meaning you use a randomizer (dice or a wheel) and then move a piece on the board. There is a big part of the game you can’t control, but in most cases these games are fun. Some of my best memories as a kid was playing games with the family and extended family. Now, in other parts of the world the games are less luck based and more choice based. Most European and Korean games are games played with a lot of choices. You have to choose what to do and each player has the same opportunity. As long as your playing board games, I am okay with either style of game or a game with a good combination of luck and choices. I recommend Lost Cities, Pandemic, Acquire, Settlers of Catan, Power Grid, and Divide and Conquer to name a few gateway games.

Regression…

The designer and publishers of Dominion have released multiple expansions and promo cards that add more action cards and twist to the base game. An issue of storage and portability comes into play. You want to take Dominion over to a friend’s house or to a convention, you would have to carry 4 boxes. After some research online [Labels, Box], I created my own storage solution. I took one box and pasted in dividers. Using card stock and labels, I then added dividers for each set of cards. The result is that all of the cards are in one box in order like a file cabinet.

Looks like there will be a new expansion for Dominion called Prosperity that is scheduled for release Aug/Sep 2010. Just maybe it will be ready for Gen Con 2010 that starts in early August this year. The good news is that I think that expansion will fit in my uni-box as well. The box is getting heavy.

It’s time for you to Throne Room + Woodcutter and buy Dominion and the expansions.

For almost 4 years, I have been carrying around a “Three of Diamonds” in my front pocket. I wanted to pull off a surprising magic trick using this precise card. The trick involves asking somebody to pick a card from an invisible deck of cards. I would say, “Pick any card,” as I fanned out a pretend deck of cards. My hope was that the trickee would pick the “Three of Diamonds”. If I could produce the card they were thinking of, they would be amazed – they would have to be.

I chose the “Three of Diamonds” for one main reason – if someone picked it out of the blue, it would be unlikely that I was prepared for that exact card. “Ace of Spades” of “Queen of Diamonds” would be obvious, but a three – none one would pick that one.

My thoughts were right, no one picked the three of diamonds for a long time, 4 years or so. I had to play it off as a joke when they said some card other than the 3 of D. Almost half the time someone picked an Ace of something.

But patience paid off. I was at a party recently and I got to try my trick again. I saw a group of ladies that were friends of friends that I had met a long time ago. I started up a conversation. I wanted to say the words “Three” and “Diamonds” in the chit-chat. After so many wrong picks, I thought that I would start stacking the deck so to speak. I had to be subtle though.

“Alright, I want you to think of any card…” I waved my hands to mock a magician and got a smile. “Pick any card… Do you have the card?… Can you see it?” She said, “Yes!?”

I dug out the hidden “Three of Diamonds” and said, “Is this your card?” She opened her eyes and reacted with total amazement. She immediately wanted to know how I just did that. “It’s magic. I am magical.”

I have since retired the trick. I didn’t want to be that guy that does magic tricks at parties. How annoying is that guy?
